    Real Recipes, Real Roots

Traditional Drinks Prepared The Way They Should Be

Traditional African drinks carry memory. Sobolo tastes like childhood in someone's grandmother's kitchen. Pine ginger takes you back to a Saturday afternoon watching the elders talk. A properly made tropical fruit punch is the sound of an aunty saying 'try this' at a wedding. These are not novelty drinks. They are cultural anchors, and we treat them with the respect they deserve.

Mijays Bar provides traditional African drinks catering for weddings, engagements, birthdays, naming ceremonies and cultural celebrations across London, Kent and the wider South East. Every drink is made from scratch using authentic ingredients, then presented and served with the polish of a professional catering team.

This is not a bottle-on-a-table job. It is a full drinks catering service, with styled presentation, trained staff and the attention to detail your family will notice on the day.

Why Our Traditional Drinks Stand Out

    Authentic Flavours, Professional Catering Standards

Anyone can boil hibiscus. Very few can serve two hundred guests a traditional drink at exactly the right temperature, with fresh garnish, in the right glass, without a single lull in service. That gap between homemade and event-ready is where our team lives.

We source ingredients carefully, prepare drinks fresh in the days leading up to your event, and finish everything on the morning of service so nothing tastes tired. Our recipes have been refined over hundreds of events, so a bride's aunties nod their approval before service even begins.

Combine that authenticity with proper catering standards, food-safety trained staff, professional glassware and styled presentation, and you have a drinks offering that respects the culture without feeling homemade or informal.

    What families consistently tell us

    • The sobolo tasted the way it should, not watered down
    • The elders were impressed, which is the hardest test of all
    • Non-African guests asked what everything was and loved trying it
    • The drinks display was one of the most photographed parts of the event
    • Service felt authentic but genuinely premium at the same time

    Common Questions

    Frequently Asked Questions

Which traditional African drinks do you offer?

Our core menu includes sobolo (zobo), pine ginger, tropical fruit punch, chapman and kunu. We can also develop signature or regional drinks on request. Every drink is prepared fresh, from scratch, using authentic ingredients.

Are the drinks alcoholic or non-alcoholic?

Our traditional drinks are non-alcoholic as standard, which suits cultural, family and faith-observant events. We can source and pair authentic African beers, wines or spirits alongside on request.

Can you cater traditional drinks for both intimate and large events?

Yes. We regularly serve between 30 and 500 guests. Larger events are scaled with additional dispensers, service staff and prep capacity to keep every drink fresh.

Do you also serve food alongside the drinks?

Yes. Traditional drinks catering pairs beautifully with our traditional snack catering, canapé menus and BBQ grill catering. Most clients book a combined package.

How far in advance should we book?

For weddings and peak-season events we recommend booking eight to twelve weeks in advance. Smaller birthdays and midweek events can often be booked within two to three weeks subject to availability.
